What do we mean by?

Neurodevelopmental conditions

The term neurodevelopmental conditions is used to describe a range of disorders/conditions which are neurodevelopmental in origin.  Put simply, impairments in the growth and development of the brain or central nervous system.  These conditions can affect emotional regulation, communication, memory, behaviour and the ability to learn.

Some of the more common conditions that come under the term neurodevelopmental conditions are autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), sensory processing difficulties, developmental coordination disorders, Irlen's Syndrome, genetic conditions such as Fragile X and specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia as well as associated SEN and disability.

Learning difficulties

A learning difficulty can be described as affecting the way a person understands and processes information, how they communicate and learn new things in any area of their life, not just at school.  Those living with a learning difficulty can have difficulty understanding new or complex information, learning new skills and coping independently.

Left unrecognised and unsupported, neurodevelopmental conditions and learning difficulties can lead to an increase in associated mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression, low mood and more.
